“Every Batman movie, in my opinion, starts with the car. After [director Matt Reeves’] facing Bruce, our first conversations were about, ‘What does this mean for the car?'” The Batman production designer James Chinlund said Reverse on the hero’s hot rod. “It was the first piece of design we tackled. All the other designs go back to the car. We loved the idea that Bruce was a gearhead, that he spent a lot of time in the garage. He was a natural idea that he can I have other cars lying around the store, so while he was thinking about his mission, he thought to himself, “I need a vehicle to get around. What do I need this vehicle to do?”
One of those needs: chasing criminals with an intimidating vehicle like John Carpenter’s possessed Plymouth Fury Christina.
“Matt was talking about Christina and a few other cars and movies that really had a presence. We knew we wanted it to be a car and not a tank. We wanted the audience to recognize that this was something they could build themselves,” Chinlund said. “We started with the frame, the big steel bumper. We used the roof from a 1969 Charger because we felt like he built that frame and was like, “Well, I need a roof. So he cut the roof off that car and glued it on.”
as his driver, The BatmanThe beastly Batmobile from “reflects its focus on the mission. It’s focused on the achievement, it’s not about a grand design statement,” Chinlund explained. “It’s kind of a lean, mean version of the Batman. There’s no wasted space, there’s no decoration. There’s no frills. It’s a man against the evils of the city. The car reflects this individual who stands up against the world.”
